LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – The McDonald’s E. Coli outbreak has infected at least 75 people across 13 states and one person has died.
While none of those people were in Nevada, multiple McDonald’s restaurants in Nevada have made menu modifications.
As a safety precaution, some McDonald’s in Nevada and eleven other states have pulled the quarter pounder with cheese off the menu. Depending on where you go, it’s still available.
The culprit for the sandwich’s disappearance is the bacteria Escherichia Coli, better known as E. Coli.
Infectious disease specialist Dr. Brian Lipman explained how it gets in produce.
“There have been outbreaks linked to apples and strawberries. They become contaminated with animal waste,” Lipman said.
It’s not just those fruits. One of the latest suspects in the outbreak is onions.
“You slice the onion, and it gets into the food,” Lipman said.
Symptoms of E. Coli include intense diarrhea, intense vomiting, and dehydration symptoms like dizziness or a dry mouth. Those experiencing symptoms should seek medical attention.
Dr. Lipman also added that if onions are the source, this can affect other fast-food chains, so pay attention to the latest updates from reliable sources.
8 News Now reached out to McDonald’s to learn which ones in Nevada don’t have the sandwich and had not received a response as of Friday.
California-based Taylor Farms has started a voluntary recall of their onions during the investigation. The company that owns Taco Bell and other fast-food chains has pulled onions from some of their restaurants as well.
