LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Police are investigating a shooting involving officers Thursday morning east of UNLV, according to Las Vegas Metropolitan police.
The 8 News Now Investigators have learned the incident involved a man armed with a knife who got out of a vehicle and charged toward officers.
The shooting happened around 4:30 a.m. at the intersection of Harmon Avenue and Paradise Road. During a news briefing, Capt. Kurt McKenzie said the officers were on an unrelated traffic stop when another vehicle stopped at the scene and a man got out of the car with a knife over his head and charged at officers forcing them to shoot the man. The man was transported to Sunrise Hospital with critical injuries.
McKenzie said investigators are trying to determine exactly what happened.
“The event happened extremely fast. Officers were not really focusing on the subject, they were focusing on the individual that they were dealing with and he approached them.”
The intersection of East Harmon Avenue and Paradise Road is closed to traffic. Paradise is also closed to traffic from Harmon to near Tropicana Avenue. Drivers can use Maryland Parkway or Koval Lane as alternate routes.
McKenzie said no officers were injured. He said more information will be released at a briefing in the coming days. This is the eighth shooting involving a Metro police officer in 2024.
