LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — The Animal Foundation is waiving adoption frees for dogs and cats over the weekend after the shelter took in more than 2,000 animals in July.

The Foundation said in a release Thursday that it will be waiving all adoption fees for dogs and cats, including puppies and kittens, on Saturday, July 27, and Sunday, July 28.

This initiative is part of the nationwide Empty The Shelters adoption event, which is sponsored by The BISSELL Pet Foundation and Cathy Bissell.

In July so far, The Animal Foundation has taken in 2,165 animals, with 150 arriving on Wednesday, July 24. According to the shelter, as of publication, the shelter has 281 pets waiting for forever homes.

The influx of animals has placed a significant strain on the shelter, according to the release. The foundation will have additional staff and volunteers will be on-site to help with the adoption process.

Adoptions are first-come, first-served, and potential wait times are expected. Depending on the size of the line, adoption services may be limited later in the day.

The shelter opens at 11 a.m., but a line often forms beforehand, the shelter said.
