LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — It was a busy weekend across the state as holiday travel was top of mind for many. While travelers were getting caught up in the hustle and bustle of friends and family, Nevada State and Metro police took to the roadways to ensure drivers’ safety.

Nevada State Police hosted its “Impaired Driving Apprehension Campaign” in honor of fallen Nevada State Police Sergeant Michael Abbate and Trooper Alberto Felix. Both officers lost their lives in the line of duty after being hit by a drunk driver a year ago.

As part of the Impaired Driving Apprehension Campaign, law enforcement was out in full force Saturday patrolling the roads statewide.

The statewide results were:

  • 540 vehicle stops
  • 255 citations issued
  • 32 DUI arrests
  • 13 other arrests

In Clark County, Metro and State police made 19 DUI arrests with 92 citations given out along with nine other arrests made.

Kari Harlan, President of “Stop Road Crashes” is an advocate for road safety after her own mother-in-law was killed by a drunk driver.

“No loved one should ever have the experience of finding out that someone has been killed in a road crash. It’s tragic and life changing and doesn’t need to happen,” Harlan told 8 News Now.

Harlan said that Stop Road Crashes’ goal is to work with legislators to better enforce laws and add more security measures on the roadways.

“It seems like It’s the cultural norm in Las Vegas that when the light turns yellow, that doesn’t mean to slow down, but in turn you see 5 or 6 cars go through on red,” she added.

The Impaired Driving Apprehension Campaign covered Las Vegas, the northern part of Reno and the central part of Elko.

Participating law enforcement partners included Nevada State Police Highway Patrol Division, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, City of Las Vegas Marshals, Clark County School District Police, North Las Vegas PD, Boulder City PD, Reno Police Department, Washoe County Sheriff’s Office, and Carson City Sheriff’s Office.
