LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — The Henderson Police Department is mourning the loss of one of their canine officers Thursday morning.
According to a post from the HPD Facebook page, K9 Rado fell ill and was taken into emergency surgery. Despite efforts to save him, he passed away after complications from the surgery.
“It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Henderson Police K9 Rado,” the post said.
Rado, a black Belgian Malinois, was two years old, born on April 14, 2023. He joined the HPD in July 2024 from Gold Coast K9 in California as a Patrol Service Dog alongside his handler, Officer J. Kneynsberg.
Though Rado was only with the HPD for just nine months, the department said he made a lasting impact.
“His intensity, drive, and eagerness to work were unmatched. Whether it was a 4 a.m. callout or a routine patrol, Rado met every shift with excitement, literally jumping with all four paws off the ground when he saw his handler in uniform,” the department wrote.
While off-duty, Rado was affectionate and easygoing and never left his handler’s side. He was always ready for a neck scratch or a head pat.
“He was not just a working dog—he was a companion, a teammate, and a friend.”
During his service, Rado was responsible for five peaceful surrenders, including two situations where he located fleeing suspects.
“His contribution to officer safety and community protection was significant and will not be forgotten,” HPD wrote.
The department extended their deepest condolences to Officer Kneynsberg and thanked Rado for his dedication.
“He will be greatly missed by all who knew and worked with him.”
