LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — An 18-year-old is accused of the shooting death of a teen after witnesses said he arrived at the home armed, intent on fighting another individual in the street near an east Las Vegas complex.
Just before 4:45 p.m. on Monday, dispatchers received a 911 call regarding the shooting of James Lobue, 15, in the 6900 block of Kepler Drive near Carey Avenue and Hollywood Boulevard. Lobue was reported missing in North Dakota, having previously lived with his mother in Bismarck.
When officers arrived, a number of young people fled the house. According to police documents, there were two adults in the apartment at the time of the shooting. Lobue was found in an apartment with a gunshot wound to his torso.
A witness told police that Lobue’s brother, identified as Browdy Shaffer, 18, had come to the apartment with a pistol. According to the report, Shaffer was planning to confront a person who lived there for a previous incident to fight that person in the street. That fight never occurred.
According to the witness, Shaffer had placed a video call to a girl and was showing off the pistol, illuminating the attached flashlight and laser. The witness told police that they had heard a loud pop before Lobue grabbed his side, groaning in pain. Everybody ran, the witness said, and Browdy attempted to help the 15-year-old before leaving.
Witnesses identified Shaffer, and two days later, he was taken into custody by Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department officials. He was booked on charges of open murder with a deadly weapon.
Shaffer is being held in the Clark County Detention Center and is due for a court appearance on Sept. 10.
